Abstract
An all-glass filtration apparatus (Millipore),assembled with the membrane filters (Sartorius)with an average pore diameter of 0.01μm or the cenophanes(Union Carbide) with a uniform pore diameter of 0.0024μm was used for the apparent permeability test to bacteria ; Serratia marcescens, Pseudomonas aeruginousa and Staphylococcus aureus. ln coditions that the diameters of the membrane filters and cellophanes were larger than the extemal diameter of the filter holder base of the filtration apparatus, the tests were carried out.
lsolated bacterial suspensions of the membrane filters, contained or not the solid bodies such as aluminum bronze etc, were subjected to filtration, followed by the incubation of the filtrates on nutrient agar or in nutrient broth. Bacterial growth was observed when the solid bodies were added to the bacterial suspension. Also, isolated bacterial suspensions of the cellophanes, contained or not the solid bodies such as aluminum bronze etc, were subjected to standing, followed by the incubation of the cellophanes placed, upside down, on nutrient agar. Bactrial growth was observed on the surface of the cellophanes when the solid bodies were added to the bacterial suspensions. 0n the other hand, the absence of the solid bodies in the bacterial suspensions resulted in no bacterial growth in all cases.
Though the role of the solid bodies is uncertain, the evidence strongly supports the view that the microorganisms have ability to reproduce by no cell division. The novel reproductive phenomenon of bacteria named tentatively as Y-phenomenon (yasunaga).
